It is said that "Tororo-jiru" grated Japanese yam mixed with "dashi-jiru" (Japanese soup stock liquid) made from "iriko" (small dried sardines) or bonito flakes, helps digestion, and it was served on January 2nd in Tamba-Sasayama City to help digestion after eating heavy New Year Dishes. This custom can be found in the areas eating "tororo" (grated Japanese yam). "Yamaimo" (Japanese yam) is not a specific species, but a general name for yams in "Dioscoreaceae" like "nagaimo" (Chinese yam), "yamato-imo", "ichou-imo" or "jinenjo" (all are kinds of yam). "Yamato-imo" grown in Tamba-Sasayama region is called "Yama no Imo", and it's dense and very sticky because of its unique climate in the area and long-time selective breeding.
